Last night, a really incredible man died.  I’m not normally one to run the gauntlet of OMG RIP SOMEONE I’VE NEVER MET HASHTAG SOSOSAAAAAD, but I’ll definitely make an exception for the late, great Mr. Christopher Hitchens.

The modern world is a crazy place.  Christian evangelicals are worming their way into the very top ranks of US politics through a terrifying dominionist doctrine that denies global warming and believes gay people are mentally ill, punk rock kids in Indonesia are being rounded up, beaten and shaved of their long and therefore ‘rebellious’ hair a police force trying to ‘set them on the right moral path’ of Sharia Law, and the Middle East still shows little sign of reaching anything remotely resembling peace. 

Religion poisons everything, as Hitchens says. 

The world has become just that little bit more stupid, ignorant and dull now that Hitchens has died.

I hope that people will continue to see him as the truly wonderful, insightful, understanding, intelligent and caustically witty man that he was.

I’d say Rest In Peace, but, y’know, he’d probably tell me off for saying that.
